Boots, Chaps, and Cowboy Hats August 25, 2007

Filed under: Anti-Orange, Go Dawgs! — Ally @ 5:34 pm

It’s just 7 short days until the cowboys of Oklahoma invade Athens town.

I’ve been excited about this game for so many reasons, but mainly because this will be a high quality, non-conference opener for the Dawgs. No cupcakes this year.

When we win (notice I said When not If ) even if it’s by a hair, it will surely lend some much needed legitimacy to this young team. I’m just not worried about this game like so many pundits seem to be. Seriously, if I see one more upset prediction by so-called experts I’m gonna lose my mind! Here’s why:

  1. OK State is 3-10 in their last 13 road games losing by an average 19 ppg.
  2. Georgia is 25-2 against non-conference opponents under CMR. The 2 lossses came in bowl games (BC & WV).
  3. Georgia is 6-0 in opening games under CMR and we’ve won the last 10 open games straight.

You can thank Phil Steele for those little tidbits. I’m good, but not that good.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not naive enough to suggest this is gonna be a cake-walk like Boise St. turned out to be, but I don’t think we’re gonna get humiliated at home either.
<<insert tired vandy joke here>>

So I’m gonna put my money where my mouth is…. UGA 38 OKSU 31
Believe it. Care to make a wager?

I’ll be consumed by the game for sure but, I have to say, what I’m also interested in witnessing are the OK State fans. To say they are colorful is an understatement apparently. This kind of saddens me actually, because I’ve always had a thing for real cowboys.

Got to love the Lord for making things like this.

Seeing a man riding a horse, wearing boots, chaps, tight jeans, a cowboy hat, and a monstrous belt buckle used to do something for me. “Used to” being the operative words here.

This OK State “cowboy, boy” has definitely cooled my fascination for good…

(h/t pwd)

Good Lord, that’s worse than Rocky Top. I do hope their fans have a great time in the classic city, but hope like hell no one in a ginormous, 50-gallon, hideous orange, foam cowboy hat sits in front of me :-(

Before I forget…sorry, but I won’t be making an appearance at the KA reunion lake bash, but hope to see some of y’all at the game. If I don’t, then have a great time without me and I will definitley see y’all at the SCUm game on the 8th. Remember, I’ll be down in the RV lot (off college station) tailgating with the family and this guy.

Go Dawgs!

PS - you need to check out Kit’s blog for his upcoming best five home games & “the list” posts. Before you ask, I’m not privy to insider information concerning the meaning of “the list” but I know from experience it will be great. Trust me.

Things every girl should know about drinking August 18, 2007

Filed under: Ally stuff, Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll — Ally @ 12:59 pm

This is dedicated to Christina and Amy… remind me of this list the next time we decide to drown our sorrows.

1. Chocolate Martinis are hella good and cure the craving for a swiss chocolate binge.

2. Gin & Tonics always taste better when chased with a Marlboro Light.

3. Lime garnishes matter.

4. Pick-up lines from random guys get more cheesy & pathetic as the night rolls on.

5. Bombay Sapphire rocks.

6. Frozen Margaritas are for amateurs.

7. That Sangria means “bloodletting” is more of a cautionary note than a simple fact.

8. There is nothing sexy or even remotely attractive about attempting karaoke when you cannot stand without assistance from your friends.

9. When a guy tells you he really is interested in listening to you blather on about what a shitty girlfriend you are, what he really means is “I just want to get in your pants.”

10. Don’t attempt to “do the dare” after more than 3 hours of non-stop shots, you’ll only succeed at making an ass out of yourself.

11. Not everyone likes a drunk dial at 2 in the morning. Sorry Bill! ;-)

12. There is no upside to shots of whiskey before downing a Michelob Light.

13. Furthermore, instead of trying to remember whether its ”beer before liquor” or the other way around, just do yourself a favor and stick to one or the other.

14. If you’re the first one to offer starting the tab, get drunk quickly & forget its your card still at the bar… then you deserve exactly what’s coming to you.

15. Instead of taking that 8th shot of Cuervo, one could just calmly walk into the street, lie down, & wait.

16. For God’s sakes, be smart…always destroy the photographic evidence.

Gators Wear Jean Shorts August 14, 2007

I just saw a link to this on the Dawgpost & it made me laugh hysterically- which I desperately needed today.

Don’t you just love how he says it with such conviction & disdain? This kid’s got a firm grasp on the difference between right and wrong. Love it! I can only hope & pray I am as good a parent as little Thomas’s one day. God Bless ‘em!

Go Dawgs! 18 days and counting…

Change of Scenery August 6, 2007

Filed under: Blog Business — Ally @ 10:18 pm

If you’ve been paying close attention, then you’ve noticed I’m trying out a new title for the blog. No doubt, I’m a lucky girl. At my disposal is a creative genius who’s been helping me to see the direction of this little blog.

I love his ideas… He said that since I typically write about what’s going on in my daily life and since my ultimate goals after school are to move back to Athens or Atlanta (depending on where I get a job) that I should take a directional approach to the title & header. He also loved Andrea’s suggestion of using her favorite word: copacetic. I do too. That’s definitely a word that I want used to describe me and I’m certainly on a journey to get there.

So, more changes to come. I may have to choose another presentation and I am working on changing the header. In the meantime, in a previous post I asked for a little help from my friends. I loved all of the ideas, thank you, but the prizes go to Andrea and Kit. Andrea has already made it clear she chooses the cocktail. Guess I’ll have to wait & see what Kit will choose ;-)

To be continued…

Dawg Quick Hits August 4, 2007

Filed under: Braves & Falcons, Go Dawgs! — Ally @ 6:02 pm

First off, I am so psyched that fall camp starts today, because this means that we are less than a month away from kickoff in Athens! 28 days to be exact. It feels like an eternity since the
Peach-fil-A Bowl and I am definitely jonesin’ for football season to begin. So, on that note here’s some news & thoughts on former and current players. Some of this is old news by now for y’all, but still worthy of discussion nonetheless…

Odell

I was really bummed to read that Roger Goodell denied Odell reinstatement into the NFL. Most articles I read leading up to the ruling stated Odell had a good shot to get back in. Honestly, I think he got a raw deal. He completed both inpatient & outpatient rehab, voluntarily. He jumped through all the necessary hoops & earned a welcome back from the Bengals. He settled all of his legal issues related to the DUI. He kept his nose clean, moved back to Georgia, and started working a construction job. That had to be humbling.

My biggest complaint about the added year suspension is that it’s too harsh & inconsistent. I realize Goodell wants to clean up the image & lay down the law and I highly respect that. However, take a look at Tank Johnson. He’s had numerous issues over the years violating rules with coaches, the league, and the law, yet he was suspended for only 8 games. He was cut by the Bears a few weeks back, but he is still eligible to play in the league. In comparison, Odell got the hammer from the league & Tank will most likely get a deal with a team suffering some
D-line injuries.

I had a bad feeling though when Odell made the papers a couple of months ago for a “supposed incident” at a party. No charges were ever filed, however, and several witnesses at the party stated in interviews with police that Odell was innocent. Who knows. The fact is that was a pretty bone-headed move to get out of rehab only to go to a house party a week later with known shady characters in attendance. You would think after being suspended by the NFL for an entire season Odell would’ve busted his ass to earn another shot at his dream. Instead, he chooses to risk it all for some lame party & a girl. Hopefully the shock of Goodell stating he still thought Odell had some maturing to do will be his final wake-up call. If not, then I don’t think we’ll see him play on Sundays anymore. This will most surely be his last shot.

Update: unbelievable… Odell violated probation (after less than 2 freakin’ months) last week & is expected to turn himself in to the court on Aug 21st. damn. He missed a scheduled meeting with his probation officer which holds him in contempt & levees the initial judgment of an additional 6 days in treatment or 90 days in jail - whichever the Judge chooses. I love Odell & believe “once a Dawg, always a Dawg”… but I hope to God he gets his sorry butt thrown in the slammer for this. He’s earned it. Looks like Goodell was right.

Fred Gibson & Tony Taylor

I gotta say I was pretty shocked to hear that Fred was cut by the Falcons just 3 days into training camp, especially after he got such rave reviews in the spring mini-camp. Apparently he’s been sick, didn’t bother to tell anyone (what?), and that affected his performance on the field. I don’t know what to think about Fred. I just really hope he gets another shot to make the roster of a great team.

In better news, Tony Taylor has impressed Falcon coaches & teammates. The ajc has some great quotes from Keith Brooking about Tony - which puts to rest, hopefully, any rumors about issues between the two of them. I’ve always loved Tony & will miss him in silver britches this fall. I really hope he makes the team & gets a shot at playing on Sundays in Atlanta.

NaDerris Ward, Caleb King and the Scooters

I’m not going to get into a long discussion about these ridiculous situations. Someone else already nailed it better than I ever could. Suffice it to say, I won’t be surprised when Matt Stafford gets hauled to the pokey for jaywalking.

Update: Well, well, well at least it’s nice to know they’re equal-opportunity bigots…

Vance Cuff

He got approved! This poor kid showed tremendous character and patience while dealing with a tremendously flawed NCAA clearinghouse bureaucracy. Someone please explain to me how an advanced Speech & Communication class (that required 5 researched, formal speeches) is one minute an approved core curriculum class and the next minute it’s nixed. As a former Speech & Debate competitor (insert jokes here) I can tell you that his class was no joke. In a world where written & oral communication skills are tantamount to achieving any measure of occupational success, how could any educational agency deem this class with such insignificance? Ugh. Thank God, someone got it right and cleared him to get back on campus. At any rate, Vance handled himself with humility & class. No doubt, I think we’ll all soon see what a valuable asset he is to the Dawgs.

“Going back to Athens town… to the best old place around.”

That’s it for now. Don’t look to me to write updates on the daily happenings from camp in Athens. I have neither the time, the patience, nor the football intelligence to pen the posts. But definitely look to these guys for that stuff.

Can’t wait to start tailgating again with y’all! By the way, we’ll be in a new spot this year - I’ll forward those interested the details when dad gives them to me. Also, my Florida tickets are spoken for (sorry), but I may have at least 2 available for Western Carolina, Ole Miss and Troy. I doubt I’ll be able to make those gamedays. Let me know if you’re interested - they’re free & great seats!

Most of you know by now that sweet Amy H. is leaving Greenvegas for a new life with Manny in Massachusetts soon. And to confirm the news, I received a “save the date” card in the mail today. Congratulations you two! That’s right, she’s getting married this December 15th and once again I’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid. For those of you counting, yes this will be my 9th time in the bridal party. Ten is my limit, I swear! Seriously though, I’m honored & overjoyed to stand up with Amy and so happy that she’s found a great guy. She is truly my oldest friend - we’ve known each other since birth. We grew up in church together, shared a few heartaches and growing pains, lots of laughs, and so many triumphs over the years.

 me-and-amy-h.jpg
I’ll miss you more than you know.

As happy as I am for Amy & Manny, I am completely sad as well. As much as Manny fell in love with Amy’s southern charm, a love affair with Dixie never materialized unfortunately. So they’re setting up house above the Mason-Dixon, much to my chagrin… and Amy will be moving to Boston next month. Sux for me.

Since Amy is moving soon, this of course means my condo will be empty. I thought about leasing it out again and even had an offer last week, but I realized how much I’ve missed my bachelorette pad.  Don’t get me wrong, being at home this last year rebuilding my life has been just what I desperately needed. But, as you all have noticed, my life is so good right now & it just keeps getting better. I’m loving being back in school full-time, working (if you call it that) at the lab, being around so many people who love me and finding a new, great somebody. I just know that I’m ready to move on & move back into my home, you know? It’s time, I promise.

So, I’m sending out my own “save the date” card via this blog. Mark your calenders for Friday & Saturday October 5th & 6th - that’s when I’m moving back in. Yes, I know its football season, but I’ve done my homework. The Dawgs will be in Knoxville to collect rent, the lamecocks (sorry, but I had to) are playing UK on the 4th, and praise God none of y’all are Climpson fans. Because you all are such great friends I am prepared to reward you handsomely with plenty of beer, food, and a promise that we will be done before kickoff. If you can help, I would be much abliged & forever in your debt- just call me, shoot me an email, or leave a comment!
