So I met my friend Kirsten for an early dinner tonight after lab at Locos Grill (the black & blue burger was so freakin’ good, btw) and couldn’t believe all the meaningless static I was hearing from Dawg fans at the bar. I can’t even count how many people were literally bitching & moaning about GameDay coming to Athens this week. I couldn’t believe it. Ugh, I just don’t get it! I’ve seen the same whining going on in the message boards and on blogs since Sunday too. I actually had a gentleman in Barnes & Noble tell me today that he wrote a letter to Michael Adams to complain that his tailgate spot would be disrupted. Seriously? Are our memories that short? Have we gotten so big for our silver britches that we can’t see what an opportunity this is? Are we so petty that we can’t grasp how HUGE this is for our program for one of the biggest games of the year?
For many years Georgia fans have had a legitimate gripe concerning the lack of love & promotion of our teams on the wwl and from many in the national media as well. We’ve been dropped in the polls since the season began because our wins weren’t flashy enough. Then there was the ‘dis about Heisman candidate Knowshon Moreno’s hurdle from the Central Michigan game. But it goes back farther than just this year. The celebration has been beaten to death like a rented mule. The arguments against UGA playing in the mnc game from Herbstreit, et. al comes to mind. As well as the skewed coverage concerning the off-season arrests this year. Not to mention the fact that despite being one of the nation’s winningest teams in college football for the last 7 years, the GameDay crew has stayed away. And there is not enough room on the internet to talk about the times we’ve been doubted, criticized, and not ranked fairly in the polls. For years.
Despite all that, I don’t believe in some grand “let’s screw over the Dawgs” conspiracy and I don’t think espn hates us. I think they hate everyone except USC (the real one) and the gaytors, but that’s a post for another day. I digress.
Since the hurdle incident, however, espn has gone out of their way (even if they’re mostly mocking CMR) to show Knowshon’s athletic freakness and even featured him on GameDay before the SCUm game (see above video evidence). Herbie and Brent Musburger couldn’t have been further up Uga’s ass on Saturday as well. In case you didn’t notice, they made it sound as if Georgia was the only team on the field and Matt Stafford is already the number one pick in this spring’s draft. We couldn’t ask for more love folks, despite the fact that wasn’t our best game (see 3 missed opportunities for TDs & 12 penalties). And now the GameDay crew is headed to Athens for the Blackout game with Bama on Saturday night. We’re the premier game on national television, the showcase of the day on espn, and THE biggest game of the week. We will be the most talked about, disected, and featured team in all of college football throughout this weekend. Yet leave it to my fellow Dawg fans to still have reason to bitch & complain. Unbelievable.
Enough is enough. You cannot have it both ways people! You don’t get to voice your discontent constantly about not being invited to the party only to bitch about the cover charge & lame dj once you’re finally allowed inside. We got what we’ve been asking for and more. There’s not a drop of media exposure we’re missing this week folks. Losing your favorite tailgate spot, dealing with some extra traffic, or being inconvenienced is a marginal price to pay for the benefit we’re reaping. Trust me. So for God sakes I’m begging you to be grateful, act like the classy fans I know you to be, get excited for the game and show the entire nation how sweet it is to be a bulldawg! Most importantly, focus on your job as a fan: Wear your black, epitomize southern hospitality, collapse a lung by screaming the entire game and don’t act like a dick on GameDay Live. Btw, if you still have a voice on Sunday then you need to turn in your red & black card immediately.
Stop all the whinin’ folks. Have fun & enjoy the ride. Above all, rock Sanford Stadium so hard that it registers on the richter scale!
Go Dawgs!

Amen! I can’t stand all the whining. We sound as bad as Urban Cryer. Lets just show up and dominate, on the field and off. We will get our love from the media as long as we do our part. There is, however, one way to ensure Gameday stays away again. And that is to act like an ass. We need to be classy, just like you said. All the fans out in Arizona was a big step, now let’s show the world what UGA football in Athens (and in black) is all about. I’m pumped! Go Dawgs!
Preach on sistah!! I, for one, am elated that Gameday will be there. Hell they can have our parking spot over at Boggs Hall. My buddies and I will be more than happy to give that up for Gameday. Saturday can’t here fast enough.
Hey, I got an email from Bill and he said you aren’t coming to the game. Are you kidding me? KA open house is at 4 and you’re expected.
Call me back.
Amen to that. And i’d also say that those same yanks at espn we hate also have votes in the polls. We’re going to need some favor later on down the road when the inevitable argument arises about who plays for the championship.
Your write-up on Munson was damn good – the best I read. Good job A.
And yes, you are expected. Get that?
Sic ‘em dawgs!
Hey Ally…I have to agree with you in part about this. I definitely think those people are stupid for complaining about GameDay coming to Athens. We are getting some much-needed exposure for our program, and this will definitely be great for recruiting!!!
However, let’s get to the supposed ESPN bias. I don’t think that ESPN…the entity comprised of multiple sports journalists and broadcasters…has a bias against UGA. However, I think that Mark May has an unabashed hatred for us. I’ve read that it probably goes back to the 80s when he played at Pitt and thought Pitt deserved to go to the national championship game instead of, you guessed it, UGA. I know you are a reader of Senator Blutarsky’s blog, so you can probably search his archives because I think he had a post about it.
Also, don’t be so fooled by Herbstreit. I found a site today that tracks the voting in the polls among the voters. You can search by team and analyze everything by voter. I’ll provide the link and if you click on it, it’ll show you the results for Week 5 (for the current poll). You’ll see how all the voters in the AP poll voted for which position UGA should be in. Here’s the link:
http://pollspeak.com/pollstalker/pollstalker.php?r=T&s=5&p=9&w=5&t1=32&t2=0&v=51
You can either paste it into your browser or click on it if it comes up as a link.
Anyway, scroll down to the bottom of the list and you’ll see that Herbstreit thinks we should be ranked……..5th!!!!!! That’s unbelievably ridiculous! We’re undefeated and we should be ranked 5th?!? After starting No. 1?!?!?
I took it a step further Ally and toggled through the rankings according to week (which you can do on the left-hand side of the page. Just change the “Week” field and keep everything else the same. You’ll notice that Herbstriet has dropped us every single week starting with Week 2….after we destroyed Ga. Southern and the week after when we whipped Central Michigan, the DEFENDING MAC CHAMP that went to a bowl game last year…he dropped us AGAIN!!!
If Herbstreit was only in love with USC and the Gaytors (which, I agree, he is), then I think he should at least have us at 3. I think this poll evidence of his votes shows that he doesn’t like us at all, despite the commentary he gave during last week’s game.
Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to make sure I gave adequate support for my point. I certainly don’t think ESPN as a whole hates us…just two of their prominent college football anchors.
