The Great Escape

Just waltzed right into the endzone unscathed.

That's Georgia D for 'ya....just let him waltz right into the endzone unscathed.

Last week we finally saw some statistical information that adds relevance to the growing argument that there are glaring weaknesses on Georgia’s Defense and that there has been a steady decline in the last 4 years. Thanks to the further analysis from Matt at Georgia Tri guy, those weaknesses seem a bit more alarming. And that’s putting it mildly.

I was still in a funk about the Florida game on Friday and just really didn’t have the desire to get excited about the game with Kentucky. Apparently I wasn’t alone – our Defense didn’t seem too amped to play either. Geez, that was one sucky performance. I’m tempted to rant & rave about how low we’ve sunk amongst the ranks of actual Defensive play in the SEC, because let’s face it, we’re not playing defensively folks – that was preventative play you witnessed Saturday, not defensive. But, what do I know? I’m just a dumb fan. More importantly though, given CMR’s continuing need to defend this crap we’re trying to pass off as Defense, I’m really tempted to spend my time wisely here by ripping into Martinez like a monkey on a cupcake! But I won’t for now, simply because it’s an act of futility. It’s pretty obvious that CMR isn’t listening to the facts and has no desire to deviate from his agenda. So, I’ll just let some observations from Saturday speak for themselves.

  • As usual right off the jump, we get no pressure on the QB & they start gashing us with the triple option. We just gave Paul Johnson a reason to smile today. Fantastic!
  • Wildcats seeing nothing but daylight on the edges thanks to successfully pinning back our linebackers.
  • How do you blow a 14 point lead & all that momentum so quickly? Play Martinez’s prevent defense, that’s how!
  • Erk Russell just flipped over AGAIN, 6 feet under…. and it’s only the 2nd quarter. I’m so sorry for what he’s done to the Junkyard Dawg reputation Coach Russell.
  • All the talk about defensive improvement during this week’s practices from CMR, yet we just allowed a 15 play, nearly 7 minute drive, with 2 fourth down conversions!!!! Note: That was Kentucky’s longest & best drive of the SEASON.
  • TWO FOURTH DOWN CONVERSIONS???!!!
  • Knowshon Moreno just joined Herschel Walker as UGA’s only 2 RBs EVER to record back-to-back 1000 yard season. Wow, just WOW!!! Hopefully stupid fans will shut their pieholes now a/b taking himself out for breathers occasionally.
  • UK is getting lots of short yardage and are playing very physical up front. Sound familiar?
  • Prince Miller & Reshad Jones continue to play ring around the rosy instead of actually tackling Cobb. Are they scared or just don’t know how to wrap him up???
  • Rich Brooks decides to go for it on 4th and 8!!!! Wow, that shows you how little he thinks of our Defense. That shows you how little EVERYBODY thinks of our Defense.

AJ Green Winning TD against UK 2008

    My God A Freshman!!!

  • Kentucky is gashing our Defense in the air and on the ground – all while being led by a freshman QB in his first start.
  • They are dominating the time of possession stat – we cannot get them off the field. What a surprise!
  • We finally register a sack and it’s from a walk-on. Thank you Gulley, now go teach the others how its done. They need the lesson apparently.
  • 96 yard return from Kentucky. What. The. Hell.
  • Kentucky runs for 226 yards and that is WITHOUT their #1 back. Holy crap on a cracker!
  • Our Special Teams is neither special nor plays like a team. Blocked punt when backed up in your endzone = Colossal FAIL!
  • With 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, the Dawgs have gone 4 plays for negative 3 yards. Ugh.
  • Prince Miller, WTF are you doing running TOWARDS our endzone with that punt???!!! Holy crap!
  • I am going to cry my eyes out when Mo Mass leaves the field in silver britches for the final time. DAMN GOOD DAWG!!!!!
  • I will NOT cry when I see Willie Martinez walk the sidelines in red & black for the last time, however. Somebody, somewhere off this man a job! PLEASE! Syracuse maybe? Washington? Anyone? Bueller??
  • Matt Stafford’s best play of the year and possibly his career – escaping pressure thrice and lofting it high for AJ Bryant Green to prove why he’s related to Randy Moss. I think I just had a heartattack!
  • I’d give anything to have heard Larry Munson make the call on that play from Stafford to Green in the endzone. I miss Munson.
  • Thank God Trevard Lindley is out with an injury – otherwise we lose this game for sure.
  • The curse of Jarius Wynn lives! Second game in a row that kid has killed a forced turnover with his penchant for a facemask penalty. Sweet fancy Moses! We finally stopped them on 4th down and Wynn just shat the sheets. Unbelievable! I hope CMR makes him walk back to Athens.
  • We went from the preseason #1 team in the country to nearly losing to Kentucky, the 99th ranked Offense in D1??? Are you kidding me???
  • Demarcus Dobbs is my hero!!! Game over – Georgia wins!!!!! Dawgs win by the very skin of our teeth!!!!

    Demarcus Dobbs saves the game!

Here I am to save the daaaaay!

  • Dobbs’ one-handed grab for the int while still defending that lineman with his left hand was the definition of GATA. Willie Martinez lives to fight another day.
  • Offense was absolutely amazing today, the Defense was utterly humiliating, & Special Teams was downright pathetic. Matt Stafford & Company just saved us from the Music City Bowl!!!!
  • Please Dear God, convince Staff & Knowshon to come back to UGA next year. PLEASE.
  • Last year, nobody wanted to play us. This year, especially now, nobody is afraid to play us. We’re not only overrated, but we’re soft.
  • 125 points given up in 3 games; that’s more than 41 pts/game average folks! Gotta go back 108 years since we’ve allowed that to happen. I’m not Catholic, but somebody get me some rosary beads!
  • Redzone Defense is teh suxorz!  Opposing Offenses have scored 11 straight TDs in 11 straight possessions inside the Georgia 20 going back to the LSU game. We can’t even hold them to field goals anymore!
  • It could be worse though…. we could’ve lost at home to Wyoming. Good Night Nurse! Indeed, nothing sucks like a big orange.

I’m still in a funk about my Dawgs. I was really hoping that the fog would lift with a Kentucky win, but the truth is the fog began to start creeping in game one against GA Southern when I saw how our Defense was playing and the fog’s only gotten thicker since. I got hammered on some other blogs & message boards for calling out our inability to make stops consistently. But I knew what I was seeing was not GATA. I may not be a Coach, and I’ve never played anything more than powder puff with my Sorority or flag football with my family, but I know when something’s rotten in Denmark. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that giving up the points we’ve allowed this season is not Championship caliber Defense. As Christian (a commentor on the Senator’s blog) so perfectly stated today:

“But, just like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said about pornography in 1964 that he wasn’t exactly sure how to define it “but I’d know it when I see it” – I’m not a college football coach, nor do I know anything beyond the basics of the cover two defense – but I know crappy defense when I see it. And last week, even more than LSU or Florida, was crap. We made the KY freshman QB look like lil’ Joe Hamilton in his prime out there.”

Amen to that, Christian. The bottom line is, you can bury your head in the sand or you can spin it any way you like Coach, but the facts are facts. And they’re indisputable. I don’t care why its happening or who’s to blame anymore – it is what it is. JUST FIX IT DAMMIT! Auburn is smiling this week. Why? Because they know we can be beaten and they think they’re just the team to do it. With a running QB who’s hitting his stride and a damn good defense with revenge on the agenda, I can’t blame ‘em for their confidence. I’m damn worried. I hope to goodness CMR & CWM are too. They sure as hell need to be.

Go Dawgs!

  1. Ally-

Much obliged for the “shout out”. After further analysis, I’m ready to throw the Special Teams (and I mean Special “Ed”) under the bus as much as the defense. In watching the punt block, the almost punt block and the slowest kickoff returner ever to run a kick back over 90 yards – I feel no warmth at all.

AU has a decent kick returner (T. Davis) and TT always has a trick up his sleeve when they play a ranked opponent.

I’ll take a 42-41 victory and prepare for the flex-bone.

  2. Oh you’re welcome – it was a great comment & I liked the point you made.

I concur about the Special Teams “short bus” unit – Holy hell they were horrendous, and have been most of the season. The Auburn game worries me not only from a Special Teams perspective though. Like Kentucky, they smell blood in the water.

If the D doesn’t play like their asses are on fire, its gonna be a looooong day. I’m banking on TT’s usual inability to wake his team for the 11:30 am kick-off though and praying for 3 in a row!

Thanks for stopping by & leaving a comment Christian. I appreciate it!

  3. Ally-

The special teams have been bad all year – it is very frustrating with the athletes we have that they are so sub-standard.

AU knows they can equalize our offensive strength with some big plays on the ST units – so I’m in fear as well.

Asses on fire – that’s not like the Terence & Philip movie from South Park “Asses of Fire”? =)

Keep up the good work and Go Dawgs!!

  4. What scares me about the AU game is how every year Tubbs pulls an upset out of ass. He hasn’t done it yet this year. Hopefully he’s saving it for Alabama.

I read somewhere this morning ( I believe it was on David Hale’s blog) that the defense had a players only meeting yesterday to address the problems. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME! 10 games in and you’re just now realizing there’s a problem. That is text book denial. Of course they’re taking the blame saying they’re not executing the plays, not mentally focused, etc… How can you not be executing the plays you’ve been practicing for 2 years or more? How can you not be focused for 12 Saturdays out of 52? I just don’t understand it. If the season was MLB long then I could understand a mental lapse now and then. I know these kids “season” never ends with offseason workouts and what have you but to me that would be more reason to be focused come game day. They bust their butts for roughly 8 months to get ready for the season and now they don’t execute plays or can’t focus. Mind boggling.

Sorry for the rant Ally I’m just frustrated as hell.

  5. Dean-

I feel your frustration completely. My only comment to why they had a meeting this week as opposed to others is because – frankly – UK’s offense is so sub-standard that the performance warranted “special attention”.

It is one thing to see Tebow and Harvin running around the field – but is completely another to see Tex Cobb running around like Vince Young.

As well, the game this weekend scares me to death. We can’t allow AU to hang around all game with stupid penalties, special team breakdowns and missed tackles…..

    Go Dawgs!!
