Unless you’ve been living under a rock or in Outer Mongolia, then you’ve heard the news that UGA had to say goodbye yesterday to Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno. I’ll have a post up soon with some thoughts on their press conference, their time Between The Hedges, and their future in the NFL. In the meantime, I’m excited to start focusing on the Joe Cox era at UGA. To kick that off, here’s just one of the bazillion interviews he endured yesterday, but the only one currently on youtube. If you’re not smiling & excited too after watching this, then please return your Bulldawg Nation Membership Card – it’s no longer valid for bandwagon fans.
My Dad and I saw Joe & Mo Mass play a couple of times at Charlotte’s Independence High School, one of the winningest HS football programs in the country this last decade, their Senior year while they were being recruited for Georgia. This was obviously before Matt Stafford entered the picture, but I vividly remember thinking then what an amazing arm this kid had & how this tandem would be the biggest gem in Georgia’s recruiting classes for a long time. In case you’ve forgotten, when they committed to Georgia, Bulldawg Nation erupted with excitement. This kid hasn’t lost a game as a starter since he was in junior high – yeah, you read that right. Joe was undefeated all throughout high school. He doesn’t know what it’s like to NOT win a State Championship in one of the most competitive prep football leagues in the country. Oh and here’s another interesting tidbit: Joe was ranked higher than Texas’s Colt McCoy in their 2005 recruiting class. Not too shabby for a backup quarterback, huh?
He went a long way in proving how great of a quarterback he really is when he bailed out the Dawgs in our game against Colorado in 2006. I’ll never forget what he told the team when he was given the nod from CMR to get off the bench. Midway through the 4th quarter, we’re down 13-0 at home and Joe infamously uttered these words in the huddle: “If we can’t score two touchdowns, we don’t deserve to have G’s on our helmets.” How ’bout that dawg!!!
Thank God Joe fell in love with UGA and decided to wait his turn like Shockley did. Because he’d be starting at any other Div 1 program in the country right now, no doubt. He’s a special player with a fiery spirit. He’s a proven winner on the field & a leader in the locker room at UGA. The players love him & follow his lead – if you’ve watched him on the sidelines, you know what I mean. And if you want to hear more about what he envisions for the Dawgs next season, just watch this free video from GXtra. So as sad as I am to see Matt and Knowshon leave Athens, I’m just as thrilled for Joe to finally get his shot to lead the Dawgs back to another SEC Championship!
Go Dawgs!!!

I linked to this on my site yesterday…this was awesome stuff! I am not one of these guys who all of a sudden think Stafford sucked now that he’s gone, but I am really looking forward to Joe getting his chance!
GO DAWGS!!!
I’ve always thought Joe could handle the offense if given the chance. He’s just had the unfortunate luck of being in the same class as one of the best QB’s to come through Athens. I’ve always liked Joe’s personality and competitiveness. Plus I got a thing for redheads
